About Bakhita: From Slave to Saint

I've been greatly moved by this wonderful Italian production which illuminates Bakhita's inner strength and growing awareness of God as she navigates her life as a slave. Often in our struggles, we forget our own dignity and God's love. We feel trapped by our circumstances, but this film reminded me that most of our chains are in our head.

I first heard about St. Josephine Bakhita when I worked on a human trafficking awareness campaign in the early 2000s. Now the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Human Trafficking is celebrated on February 8, her feast day. This film is very appropriate to watch as we prepare for Lent. It was originally presented as a miniseries, so it's easy to watch either as a binge or in small chunks.
